Manuscript Momentum: A 5-day Retreat in Italy to Fast-Track Your Publishing Journey
A Masterclass in Publishing led by Literary Agent and Author Lucinda Halpern
If you’ve been dreaming of writing a book, this is the week your dream turns into an actionable plan to get published.
Welcome to the Manuscript Momentum Masterclass: five days in Florence, Italy, with top literary agent Lucinda Halpern, founder of the boutique New York agency Lucinda Literary. Over the course of the retreat, you'll learn exactly what your book needs, how the publishing business actually works, and what it takes to get an agent's attention.
For over two decades Lucinda has worked across major publishing houses including HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, Hachette and Hay House and today represents New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and internationally bestselling authors in fiction, nonfiction, and memoir.
This retreat is for fiction, nonfiction, and memoir writers at any stage — a book idea, a partial draft, or a finished manuscript ready to query.
In Florence, you’ll receive what most writers never get: five days in one of the most beautiful cities on earth, surrounded by a community of fellow writers, with access to a leading New York agent focused on your pages. By the end of the week, you'll understand what your book needs and exactly how to get it there.

Discover the Book You Were Born to Write
This week is about bringing that book to the surface.
Every writer carries a book that only they can write. Sometimes it’s already on the page; more often it’s buried in a stack of drafts, half-formed ideas, or a story you’ve been circling for years. This week is about finding it.
Each morning, you’ll work directly with Lucinda to uncover the heart of your book: the idea that sets it apart, the story only you can tell, and the reader who needs it most. Along the way, you’ll see your project the way agents and editors do. You’ll learn how they evaluate a submission, where your book fits in a crowded market, and what makes publishers say yes. By the end of the week, you’ll leave with a clear vision of the book you’re meant to write and a confident sense of how to bring it into the world.
And because we’ll be in Florence, you’ll also have the time and gorgeous landscape to fuel your creativity. Between guided sessions, you’ll enjoy immersive experiences (think: private tours, artisan encounters, and unforgettable meals) that will get you out of your head and tapped into your inspiration.
Let’s write together…in Italy!

The lens turns from the market to you: your authority, your perspective, the story you were born to tell—and how to unite that idea with the market at large.
Class III: The Page That Earns the Pitch
How agents and editors read the opening of a book, and what your submission materials must do: the query letter or book proposal, the synopsis, the critical first chapters—and what excites an agent enough to request more.
Class IV: From One Book to a Body of Work
The singular reader you serve, how platform is evaluated, a healthy rejection reflex, and when to follow up, pivot, or change projects.

Our home in Florence will be the elegant and historic Hotel Bernini Palace, a beautifully restored 15th century residence tucked into the very heart of the city, just steps from Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi Gallery. Once a noble Florentine palace, the building still carries the atmosphere of old Florence, with vaulted ceilings, antique details, and centuries of history woven into its walls.
With its timeless architecture, richly appointed interiors, and old world Florentine atmosphere, the Bernini Palace offers a sense of quiet refinement and warmth deeply connected to the spirit of Florence itself. From here, the city unfolds effortlessly around you: winding Renaissance streets, hidden cafés, artisan shops, museums, piazzas, and the golden glow of the Arno all within walking distance.
Guests can gather in the hotel’s beautiful Art Deco inspired lounge for an evening aperitivo or quiet conversation after a day of writing and exploration. The hotel’s restaurant, La Chiostrina, offers refined Tuscan cuisine inspired by regional tradition, and massage and wellness treatments can also be arranged for those seeking a bit of extra restoration during the retreat.

To arrive in Florence is to step into a city where beauty and history are woven into daily life. Often described as an open air museum, Florence carries an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world: timeless, intimate, artistic, and deeply alive. Renaissance masterpieces exist not only inside museums and churches, but alongside everyday life in sunlit piazzas, winding streets, and centuries old buildings glowing in the Tuscan light.
The city invites a slower rhythm. Church bells echo through the afternoons, café tables spill into narrow stone lanes, and the Arno River moves gently through the heart of Florence, connecting the grand historic center with the artisan filled Oltrarno neighborhood. Florence is also a city made for wandering, where some of the most memorable moments happen unexpectedly: a hidden piazza, a tiny wine window at dusk, or evening light washing across ancient stone.
For writers especially, Florence offers something rare. The city awakens the senses and quiets the noise of ordinary life, creating space for reflection, memory, and creative clarity. It is a place that encourages you not only to see more deeply, but to listen more deeply to your own inner life.
